Choosing the safest convertible car seat

So you ask, "What is a convertible car seat?"

A convertible car seat is a hybrid car seat that has been designed to meet the needs of both an infant car seat and a toddler car seat. As you may well know a seat designed for infants will put them in a rear facing position and a toddler car seat will orientate children forward facing.

A convertible style car seat serves a couple of purposes. The main purpose is for those parents that want one car seat that they feel comfortable with and will transition their baby from the infant or inclined riding position to the forward facing toddler seating. The convertible car seat does all this while maintaining a high level of safety. The other purpose is that it gives parents an option to purchase one car seat when they do not want to buy a car seat for each stage of their child's growth.

One advantage of a children's convertible ca seat is that many times these seats will hold a baby until he or she has reached 40 pounds and in some cases up to 80 pounds. These car seats give parents greater flexibility over when they transition a baby to a forward facing position.

The Niche in car seat design

The convertible car seat is a very clever design that solves a unique problem for when parents transition their baby to a different seating arrangement, however most experts recommend that all children should be in a car seat that is a design dedicated for infants during that first year because of the reclined position of the seat.

One thing that new parents will need to get themselves used to is the fact that convertible car seats will have two separate seat belt paths where the vehicle seat belt will be threaded through the car seat in order to secure it. One path will be used when the car seat is in the rear-facing position, and the other path is only to be used while forward-facing. Some times the car seats will have a separate belt path for the lap and a separate path for the shoulder part of the car manufacturer seat belt restraint system. Be sure to check your car seat manual and any labels on the sides of the car seat and be sure you are using the correct belt path as designed for your convertible car seat.
