Understanding the differences
Infant Car Seat Review And Ratings
We know that with the variety of baby car seats available today it can be difficult to choose the right model infant car seat. That is why we recommend getting as much information about car seats for infants as you can, soon after you find out you are expecting a baby. Styles can vary but with only two main types of rear facing car seats we will cover those two types here.
The two basic design choices are: infant-only seats and convertible seats.
First lets go over Infant-only seats first.
Typically these are smaller and will have a handle that helps the mother or father carry both the car seat as well as the bundle of joy inside (and sometimes this unit will come as part of a stroller system). For these car seats they are designed for newborn infants on up to babies of 22 to 32 pounds, depending on the model. The infant only car seat is typically used only for travel but often times is used for short naps while visiting family, doctors or making new friends. This is a simpler design and is not designed to be turned around. Not to be confused with convertible car seats some infant car seats come with a base that can be left in the car. The main part of the seat locks into and out of a base. The advantage is that you don't have to install the base each and every time you use it. Parents can buy as many bases for additional vehicles as they need.
The Convertible Car Seat is versatile and is used rear-facing.
The distinction between this style car seat and the one above is that they can be used rear-facing, then "converted" to forward-facing car seat as your baby grows older. There is no removable base, however but this means the seat can be used longer by your child. For the most part this style car seat is bulkier than an infant only car seat and does not come with a carrying handle. For the most part manufacturers have designed these seats with a higher rear-facing weight and height limit than an infant-only seat; we feel that a convertible car seat makes an ideal way to travel for parents with bigger babies.
